blueberry kisses 💋

Every morning for the past eight months or so, I make Joe and I smoothies to compliment Emergen-C and a bounty of vitamins. Sometimes I feel like Snow White, prancing through my kitchen, sprinkling sweet and healthy delights into the Ninja, as birds sing and Stella winds between my pink-slippered feet. Other mornings, I fail to screw the lid to the Ninja on correctly and pink, purple, and yellow substances paint the kitchen pastel and I scream, FUCK! repeatedly. But regardless, the smoothies have become part of our routine, and I now rely on them to create a feeling of excitement and progress during a period when small joys are everything.

Initially I struggled with blueberry smoothies; despite loving blueberries, they always wound up tasting like perfume to me. Though the photo to the left is adorable, that smoothie was actually very average. I failed to take a photo of it’s more delectable, winter-born successor, Blueberry Kisses 💋. The most useful hack I’ve discovered in my smoothie experimentation is simply adding a spoonful of peanut butter. Think of all the versions of jam that exist and then imagine making a peanut butter sandwich with them; in most instances, I’m down to clown. Peach and apricot give me pause, but I’d still say it’s worth a try. Peanut butter harms nothing, with the exception of those with peanut allergies, to whom I would suggest substituting something like sunflower butter? Anyways, here is the blueberry babe I hang my hat on (for now):

BLUEBERRY KISSES

Servings: 2
Ingredients (in order of addition):
1 perfect banana (Or imperfect, the more smoothies I make, the less I care about the state of the peel)
1 heaping spoonful of peanut butter (Jiff baby—this is not a PB2 kind of blog)
1 scoop of protein powder (I use Joe’s protein and used the strawberry flavor for this recipe)
1/2 cup of Greek vanilla yogurt (Or plain Dannon, that works too)
1/2 cup of vanilla Almond milk (Only ever Almond Breeze)
2 cups of frozen blueberries (Definitely use a scoop to avoid having blue fingers for the rest of your days)
Drizzle of honey or maple syrup (I’m currently out of honey and have been experimenting with maple syrup; very hit or miss for me so proceed with caution)

Add the ingredients in this order (dry, wet, frozen) and blend them up! Serve and enjoy. Happy Valentine’s Day, honey bunny. 🍯
